Bob Krause, founder and co-owner of Mail Depot, Inc. t/a Answer Center was asked his opinion about off site backup solutions. The following is his reply.
I don’t use them. I have no real reason for it. I’m a big believer in there is no such thing as too many backups and the online sites can be another tool to help secure your data.In my case I have so many computers the cost would be way more than I want to spend. If you want to use one let the online site backup your most critical data. The only sure backup scheme involves getting a complete image of your hard drive. Programs like Ghost or I think the Acronis backup programs can create the image file. The advantage of the image file is that you can use it to restore your computer 100% to the way it was the day the image file was made. Then you would use something like the online backup to restore your latest database files. The image file is so important because the image backup does not skip any files and it will let you restore your computer in an hour or so. Better yet clone a copy of your server hard drive to another spare drive and have it ready to go should your main hard drive suffer problems. I can really go on and on about backing up your files. I really hate to have a computer hard drive fail and then find out my backups can’t restore it. Meaning a reload from scratch and lost forever data.So the answer is use the on line backup service for your most important data. Having your files backed up off site is always a good idea and the off site service will do it everyday.
